The United Sates has some of the most sanitized tap water in the world but today people are beginning to ask: “what is in tap water?” While tap water has met federal and state standards the epa.gov in 2009 stated that “threats to drinking water are increasing.”

Who’s In Control of Tap Water?
In 1974 Congress passed the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) to regulate the nation’s public drinking water supply and is administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state partners. From 1995 to 2000 over $50 billion was spent on investments to fund water quality improvement.
How Do They Treat the Water?
Along with thorough ways of testing the water the EPA uses their budget to treat our Tap Water. Our drinking water comes from surface water or ground water. Surface water is usually lakes, rivers and reservoirs. Ground water is typically pumped from wells drilled into underground aquifers and geologic formations containing water. This water is then pumped to an underground network of pipes that deliver water to our homes and businesses.
Nearly 34 billion gallons of water are treated every day by water utilities. The type of treatment and amount can vary depending on the source and quality of the water with ground water usually requiring more treatment because it is exposed to the atmosphere. They use a variety of treatment processes to remove contaminants. But most water treatment is done in 5 stages:
- Coagulation-alum and other chemicals are added to the water to form small sticky particles called floc, which attract solid particles. The combined weight of the floc and solid particles become heavy enough to sink to the bottom during sedimentation.
- Sedimentation – the heavy particles and floc are allowed to settle on the bottom, and the clear water moves on to the filtration stage.
- Filtration – the water is passed through many different types of filters to remove anything larger than a water molecule. This also destroys the water molecule structure.
- Disinfection – chlorine, fluoride, and chemicals are added to the water to kill off anything that might have survived the previous stages, and also to retard mold, moss and algae growth in the pipes.
- Storage – the water is stored in closed tanks for disinfection, then run through pipes into homes and businesses.
We are only now beginning to realize that conventional water treatment removes things in the water we need such as trace minerals, and the hexagonal liquid crystalline structure that our bodies require. Tap water is no longer at the proper alkaline pH that we need, devoid of essential trace minerals, and the body has to process the water extensively to be able to use it, putting vital and limited body resources under excess stress. So Why Does Water Need to Be Treated?
The EPA sites the following as common sources of water pollution:
“Naturally Occurring: microorganisms (wildlife and soils, rdionuclides (underlying rock), nitrates and nitrites (nitrogen compounds in the soil), heavy metals (underground rocks containing arsenic, cadmum, chromium, lead, and selenium), fluoride.
Human Activites: bacteria and nitrates (human and animal wastes-septic tanks and large farms), heavy metals (mining construction, older fruit orchards), fertilizers and pesticides (used by you and others (anywhere crops or lawns are maintained), industrial plants, gas stations, dry cleaners, leaking underground storage tanks, landfills, and waste dumps), household wastes (cleaning solvents, used motor oil, pain, paint thinner), lead and copper (household plumbing materials), water treatment chemicals (wastewater treatment plants).”
EPA also admits that “All sources of drinking water contain some naturally occurring contaminants. At low levels, these contaminants generally are not harmful in our drinking water. Removing all contaminants would be extremely expensive, and in most cases, would not provide increased protection of public health.”
The key word there is “generally” not harmful.
